SNAKE SERIES
2020
The snake. Traditionally known as a symbol of evil and deviance dominates as it captures the viewer in its gaze. A collection of these predators paralyzing the one staring back at them, as if they are about to feed off their next prey. But the snake is also a symbol of growth, bringing about new beginnings and opportunities. They are viciously elegant, extremely tactile and intelligent in their means of survival. In this they show resilience. With a change in one’s mind set, the snakes presenting themselves transform from a debilitating force to radiating emblems of inner strength.

Ultimately, these pieces draw on the self as a confrontation of anxieties and encouragement to rise to the occasion. For me, creating these intense subjects is a way of instilling inner confidence and personal growth. The unpredictable nature of the snake mirrors the unpredictability of life. And as the world around us continues to form conflict, our best way of finding resolution is to ground from within. To coil and keep ourselves protected, strike when we need, but never to cower in the face of our inevitability.

The innate struggle of being in and out of control is an ever changing balance humanity has created for itself. In a society where bravery and power are equated to showing no loss of control, it masks the sense of reality. Instead, it is being able to take off the mask that shows strength. We are our truest selves when we are most vulnerable. And yet, the precariousness of life is sometimes so debilitating, we are led to feeling powerless. Instead of hiding and denying, but facing this head on, we might find these obstacles are easier to overcome.
